Volumes up

Volumes in the derivatives segment went up today and on the NSE, the futures and options segment recorded a turnover of Rs 12,734 crore with 5.8 lakh contracts being traded. Stock futures registered a turnover of Rs 6,476 crore while the turnover in index futures was at Rs 4,702 crore.
The total open interest outstanding was in excess of 40 crore shares. The cumulative positions of FIIs as a percentage of the total gross market position in the derivatives segment on April 19 was 30.69 per cent. On Tuesday, the FIIs were net sellers in futures and net buyers in options.
In the futures segment, the most actively traded contracts were those of Tata Steel (TISC.BO, news) , TCS, Reliance (RELI.BO, news) Industries, State Bank of India and Infosys among others.
The Nifty April futures also rapidly closed the gap between it and the underlying cash value, closing at 1927 against the spot Nifty closing value of 1929.70 at the end of the day.
The Nifty put-call ratio also stood at 0.7 at the end of the day.
The NSE also added 34 new scrips to the derivatives segment today. Prominent among them were Bharti Tele (BTEL.BO, news) -Ventures, Indian Hotels and Bharat Forge (BFRG.BO, news) among others. Dealers said that the segment was acquiring more depth as there were a lot more stocks to play around with.
