SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia, one of the biggest bulk farm produce exporters in the world, is looking to increase food exports to another agricultural giant, India, through processing ventures.
Australian Trade Minister Warren Truss on Thursday said an India-Australia Joint Ministerial Commission meeting in New Delhi had endorsed proposals for Australian companies to participate in the Indian food processing sector.
This could mean increased exports in particular of grains, horticulture and dairy products, a spokeswoman for Truss said from Canberra.
Food produce is not a major traditional Australian export to India, apart from occasional large-scale exports during wheat crop failures. Australian exports to India are traditionally dominated by coal and gold, with wool another significant export.
Both countries would work to boost Australia's participation in the Indian food processing sector, Truss said in a statement released in Australia. He will return from India this weekend.
