Corporate governance may have creeped into the lexicon of corporate India recently, but it was octogenarian Basant Kumar Birla, grandfather of Kumar Mangalam, who on Thursday set a precedent when he spearheaded the annual general meeting of his group company, Jay Shree Tea & Industries Ltd, on Thursday at Sangeet Kalamandir in central Kolkata, even as a fire raged in the auditorium. Had the incident occurred even a quarter of an hour later, it could have resulted in a major catastrophe. BK Birla and Brij Mohan Khaitan, the owner of one of the world's largest tea plantation companies, McLeod Russel, would have been caught in the flames. Narrating the story to FE, Jay Shree Tea MD DM Jain said, "When we reached Kalamandir, which was scheduled for 10 am, we were shocked to find smoke coming out of the auditorium. But BK Babu told us to continue the meeting at the driveway."
