German team to explore biz in power sector

A high-ranking German delegation from the energy and power sector is coming to India. They will explore new business & investment opportunities and address energy concerns through promotion of renewable sources and environmental friendly technologies. The delegation will comprise top officials from the ministry of economics and energy, State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and leading German power & energy companies. The delegation will be holding a one-day seminar and official interaction in Mumbai and Kolkata on September 26 and September 28, respectively. "India and Germany have been traditional friends with a long history of mutually beneficial co-operation. Germany has the potential to help India's spiralling electricity needs. Renewable energy will inevitably become more important given the high oil prices and limited reserves of fossil fuels," said Volkhard Riechman, deputy secretary of state, ministry of economic affairs and energy, State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The major challenges faced by the power sector in India are those related to ensuring financial viability of projects owing to the poor financial status of the state electricity boards. Other challenges include enhancing the efficiency of the power plants that are in need of renovation and modernisation.
