Motorola Chennai facility to go on stream next month

The factory of the US-based Motorola to manufacture mobile handsets, being set up in the SIPCOT Hi-Tech Special Economic Zone at Sriperumbudur, will start production next month, according to Tamil Nadu chief secretary LK Tripathy. The project being set up with an investment of Rs 135 crore would manufacture about one million handsets a month, both for the domestic and export markets.

Motorola would be the third unit to commence production from among the 11 companies which signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) since the present government came to power in May 2006. They involve investment of Rs 11,083 crore and creation of 1.25 lakh direct jobs.

The two units already operational are Dell and Samsung. Dell has started computer manufacturing at the SIPCOT Hi-Tech SEZ, investing Rs 280 crore .

Samsung also has started manufacture of colour television, refrigerators, airconditioners, washing machines computer LCD monitors, computer printers etc at Sriperumbudur investing Rs 450 crore.

According to the data released by the chief secretary, the other MoU units are at various stages of implementation. Some are at production stage or nearing completion of project construction. Others are preparing for construction and would commence works shortly. Companies like Tata Steel and MPPL are purchasing land to set up their projects.

Assembly and production test centre for integrated circuit devices by Tessolve Services Ltd of the US at Sriperumbudur will begin in February 2008. It is investing Rs 1,000 crore over five years. In the first phase two lakh sq ft building is to be completed by next February.

Construction of footwear SEZ of Growth Link Overseas Ltd, a subsidiary of Feng Tay of Taiwan, in SIPCOT Cheyyar industrial park with an investment of Rs 300 crore is to be completed in December 2008.

Caparo Vehicle Products India Pvt Ltd, implementing new projects, for manufacturing tubular parts for automotive and aerospace, automotive braking systems, fastners and composite materials and testing, at Orgadam SIPCOT industrial complex with over Rs 300 crore investment in three years, has taken possession of the land and would start construction shortly.

Sanmina planning to establish a manufacturing facility in the special economic zones format over an area of 100 acres in SIPCOT Hi-Tech SEZ at Orgadam Industrial park to manufacture electronic hardware parts investing Rs 225 crore to Rs 315 crore would begin construction by November 2007. Production will begin in July 2008.

Apollo Tyres which had agreed to build a radial tyre manufacturing facility at Orgadam SIPCOT industrial complex investing Rs 520 crore is making arrangements for project construction work, expected to start by year-end.

Land is being handed over to the Mahindra & Mahindra consortium comprising Mahindra, Renault of France and Nissan Motor Company of Japan in Orgadam SIPCOT Industrial Park. The initial investment is worth about Rs 4,000 crore to manufacture four lakh vehicles , including 50,000 tractors a year.

Tata Steel has started land procurement activates for its Rs 2500-crore Titanium dioxide project.

MPPL FEZ (Future Energy Zone) with plans for investment of Rs 900 crore in the renewable energy sector by establishing industrial park, technology park and social infrastructure in Kancheepuram district is engaged in direct procurement of land. The company will invest another Rs 473 crore joint venture companies to set up units in the areas of biomass, biomass boilers, biofuel and biodiesel plants etc.
