Common man forgotten amid development: Lord Paul

By Agencies

India may have achieved 'tremendous' economic development but the 'ordinary man' has been forgotten amidst all the growth, NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul said.

"Economic development is not (merely) enough for a country to be part of the developed world. In India, 30-35 per cent of children still do not get primary education. Some 40 per cent people are below the poverty line. Many are even poorer than the people in poorest nations of Africa," he said addressing students and staff of Apeejay School of Management.

"What good is the nine per cent rate of growth if it does not reach all the people... We will have to carry India's 1.2 billion population along on the path of development," the Chairman of Caparo Group said.

"We have lost touch with the ordinary man," he said.

Elaborating on the challenges before the country, Lord Paul termed as "shameful" the practice of female foeticide that is prevalent in many parts of the country.
