By Corporate Bureau

Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) has bagged an order worth Rs 1,140 crore to supply 156 units of standard gauge metro coaches to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), a top official of the company said.

At the inaugural function of BEML's second rail coach unit in Kolar Gold Fields on Tuesday, BEML chairman and managing director VRS Natarajan said that DMRC order has a proviso to increase the number of coaches to 192 units valued at Rs 1,400 crore. "This was the single largest order in the history of the company," he said.

Looking at the huge opportunities for metro systems in the country, he said the company has earmarked Bangalore rail coach factory for metro related products and relocated the conventional rail coaches, electric multiple units (EMUs) and the military wagons to second rail coach unit in Kolar Gold Fields.

With the expected demand of 1,800 metro cars worth Rs 13,000 crore in the next 5-7 years, he said BEML would have sizeable share in the metro business. While the country require 22,500 rail coaches in the next five years during the 11th Plan following the expansion plans of the Indian railways, he said, "we have proactively carved out plans to expand our production with huge outsourcing."

He also said the company is contemplating collaboration with an MNC for joint venture for multiple bogie production for captive use and supply to Indian railways and metros.

"We are hopeful of reaching Rs 1,000 crore turnover in the next three to four years from the current Rs 100 crore volume in rail and metro business, "he added.

He said the company would set up an R&D centre for metro coaches with the Union government grant and the proposal is in the advanced stage of approval of the Cabinet.
