By Economy Bureau

Increase in prices of various food items and other essential commodities led to three and four point increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for agricultural and rural labourers, respectively, in June to stand at 434 points for agricultural labourers (AL) and 435 points for rural labourers (RL) .

Punjab recorded the highest number of points topping the index table both in AL as well as in RL while Manipur was at the bottom of the list in both the categories. The rise in index varied from state to state. In the case of agricultural labourers, 13 states reflected an increase in index ranging between 2 and 4 points and in seven states it was between 5 and 7 points. Punjab with 472 points topped the index table whereas Manipur was at the bottom with the index level of 380 points.

In the case of rural labourers , the increase in index ranged between 2 and 4 points in 12 states and between 5 and 7 points in 8 states. Punjab with 471 points topped the index table whereas Manipur was at the bottom with the index level of 381 points.

The CPI of Haryana and Punjab for AL and Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra for R L registered the highest increase of 7 points each mainly due to increase in the prices of rice, wheat/wheat atta , masur dal , mustard oil, vanaspati , gur , shirting cloth, anacin and washing soap. Point to point rate of inflation based on the CPI-AL and CPI-RL decreased from 9.11 % and 8.84% during May, 2008 to 8.77% and 8.75% respectively in June, 2008.
