KDDI Begins Deployment of World’s Fastest EPON FTTx |
 |
Petaluma, California, United States, Tuesday, December 09, 2008 -- (Business Wire India) --
Teknovus, the leading provider of EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical
Network) chips for the deployment of triple-play services in FTTx
broadband access networks, announced that commercial deployment of 2Giga
bps EPON FTTx has started in KDDI’s fiber networks. This is the first
commercial deployment of Teknovus’ 2.5G Turbo-EPONTM.
The world’s first and fastest 2G-EPON deployment at KDDI is based on
Teknovus’ 2.5G Turbo-EPON chips and embedded software. Turbo-EPON is
fully compliant with IEEE 802.3ah 1.25G EPON specifications, offering an
enhanced Turbo-EPON mode for 2.5G operation. Teknovus is the first PON
chip vendor providing a smooth upgrade to higher speeds with proven
commercial deployments.
KDDI is a leading Japanese service provider offering both mobile and
fixed communications services. KDDI acquired the fiber network business
from TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power) in 2007 and Chubu Tele-Communications
(CTC) from Chubu Electric Power in 2008, significantly expanding KDDI’s
reach to landline subscribers. KDDI is the leading FMBC (Fixed Mobile
Broadcasting Convergence) service provider in Japan, offering advanced
voice, data, and video services over both wireless and landline
networks. In addition, KDDI is an investor in UQ Communications, the
leading WiMAX network throughout Japan.
Teknovus’ Turbo-EPON ONU chip, the TK3714, enables service providers to
manage QoS (Quality of Service) per service, per subscriber,
guaranteeing quality delivery of bandwidth-sensitive triple-play
applications. With Turbo-EPON, service providers can offer more HDTV
channels using existing fiber plants, thereby reducing subscriber CAPEX
and OPEX. Alternatively, for high-density environments, Turbo-EPONTM
enables service providers to support more subscribers per PON while
maintaining strict per service, per subscriber QoS. Teknovus provides a
full product suite of EPON chips and software, supporting 1G, 2.5G and
10G, with compatibility on a single network. Service providers can
optimize their networks based on density and ever changing bandwidth
demands by subscribers and applications.
Mr. Ryoji Takaichi, Teknovus Japan Country Manager, stated, “Teknovus’
Turbo-EPON is enabling service providers to significantly increase
upstream and downstream speeds while maintaining their investments in
existing deployments. KDDI is leapfrogging competitors with faster
speeds and advanced services for its subscribers.”
