Tata Motors' sales decline 47%, Hyundai's rise in Dec

) registered one of the biggest drops in domestic sales for the month of December at 23,894 units. This is a decline of 44% compared to 42,977 units in December last year. The company s total sales (including exports) for the month of December 2008 were 25,219 vehicles, a decline of 47% compared to 47,678 units last December. The commercial vehicle segment of the company was severely hit as sales of commercial vehicles in December 2008 in the domestic market were down 51%. The medium and heavy commercial vehicle segment was most severely hit. Sales of the segment declined 69% as compared to December 2007. Tata Motors exports also showed a huge decline of 72% at 1,325 vehicles in December 2008 compared to 4,701 vehicles in December 2007. Domestic sales of Mahindra and Mahindra too dropped to 10,252 units in December 2008 from 14,267 in December 2007. Overall, passenger car sales have been showing a decline for three consecutive months, with November registering the biggest dip of 19.4%. Hyundai Motor India (HMIL), the country s second largest car manufacturer, has registered a 19.3% increase in domestic sales, bucking the downward trend in auto sales in the country. The company s exports grew 96.8% during the month of December compared to the same period of the previous year. HMIL s total sales for December 2008 stood at 38,402 units. The domestic market accounted for 15,602 units, 22,800 units were exported in the last month of the year. India s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, which released its sales figures on Thursday, recoded a drop of 10.3% in domestic sales. Sales of General Motors India were down by 35.9%. TVS Motor Company, the country s third largest two-wheeler manufacturer (cumulatively) also saw its sales slip 8.5% at 89,285 units in December 2008. This was against 97,576 units in the corresponding period of the previous year. However, the company s exports maintained an upward trend, registering a 49% increase at 16,930 units. ), also saw December sales dip by 10.2% and 32.7% respectively. The two companies released their sales figures on January 1. Inflation, inadequate availability of retail finance and high interest rates continued to deter purchase decisions of customers and affected sales. However, Honda Siel Cars India managed to increase its sales during the month. Honda Siel Cars India clocked a growth of 9% in December 2008 by selling 3,667 units as against 3,363 units sold in the corresponding period last year. The company sold 2,972 units of its Honda City in December 2008, the highest among its cars. Meanwhile, kodaIndia did not disclose its December stand-alone figures. The company s overall sales for the year increased 28.5% at 16,188 units compared to 2007. Yahama Motors, which recently added two new bikes to its India portfolio, recorded a 13.3% jump in sales for 2008 at 1,36,468 units. Yamaha, too, did not announce stand-alone sales for December.
