) chairman U D Choubey on Monday made an emotional appeal to its officers on not joining the strike as stopping work would be catastrophic for a strained economy that is also facing terrorism threats. Oil sector officers association, an amalgamation of executives from 14 public sector oil firms, has called an indefinite strike from January 7 to press for higher wages. Choubey in a two-page appeal issued to his 2,300 officers stated that withdrawal of the strike call would be their best parting gift to him. Choubey retires from service on July 31. Striking work has always been detrimental to the productivity and in the present situation it will adversely affect our performance, particularly when we are confronting several ongoing problems like economic slowdown, terrorism and happenings in the neighbourhood, he wrote. Warning of stringent disciplinary actions, including those under punitive ESMA and National Security Act, he said oil minister Murli Deora has already taken up officers cause at the highest level and good results were expected in short time.
