Tata Steel Q3 sales dip 14%

) s hot metal production at 1.70 million tonne and crude steel production at 1.50m tonne for the third quarter to December 2008 have been higher by 23% and 17%, respectively, over the corresponding figures of the third quarter of last fiscal. Also, the steel major s saleable steel production for the quarter remained almost at the same level of 1.24m tonne as in the third quarter of last year, in spite of a planned major shutdown of the hot strip mill. However, the current economic slowdown has seen the company s third quarter sales at 1.07m tonne, which is lower by about 14% as compared with the corresponding third quarter last year. The company s sales of long products at 0.48m tonne have, however, been up by 27 % as compared with the year-ago period. During the quarter, Tata Steel commissioned its third billet caster at its steel melting shop and completed upgradation of its roughing mill of hot strip mill as a part of the 1.8 mtpa expansion of its existing units. The company is also continuing with its growth plan to reach the the 10 mtpa capacity at its Jamshedpur works by 2010. The yield of its wire rod mill (WRM) also increased to 98.80% from last year s 96.35% for the third quarter.
