By fe Bureaus
Weak global cues as a result of a sharp setback in Chinese stocks, along with disappointing results from Tata Steel (TATASTL.BO : 541.95 +8.5
) back home, spooked the domestic equity indices on Thursday. The 30-share Sensex (^BSESN : 16027.42 -14.76
) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) fell 344.02 points or 2% to end the trading session below the psychological 17k level at 16,854.93 points. Similarly, the broader 50-share Nifty (^NSEI : 4777.95 -14.7
) of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) drifted 102.60 points or 2.01% to end the trading session at 5005.55 points.
Majority of the Asian markets closed lower on concerns that the Chinese authorities may impose measures to stem surging asset prices and the decision by Vietnam to devalue its currency further dampened sentiments across Asia-Pacific markets. Shanghai Composite fell 3.62%, while Nikkei 225 slid 0.62% to hit a four-month closing low. The stock of Tata Steel fell 3.34% or Rs 18.75 to close the day at Rs 543.45.
