No direct impact on road freight sector

Mamata Banerjee's decision to not to increase freight charges would help the Railways to have an edge over road transport that has become expensive by 10 per cent with the rise in diesel prices, according to experts. As India Inc resorts to cost cutting, suppliers would opt for the Railways due to the price advantage. He said companies other than steel and cement manufacturers would stay with road transporters. "We give credit and assure timely delivery, which the Railways can't." "The end customer will benefit with better coordination between the Rail-Road freight sectors, with the timely and efficient execution of the initiatives announced. We strongly believe that Rail & Road collectively can enhance productivity and efficiency of the Indian Logistics Industry," said D.P. Agarwal, vice chairman and managing director, Transport Corporation of India.
