Bharti Airtel crosses 1 mln customers in Sri Lanka

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Bharti Airtel (BHARTIARTL.BO : 283.65 +2.65), India's top mobile operator, said on Tuesday it had crossed 1 million subscribers in Sri Lanka after launching services in the Indian Ocean island country in January.

Sri Lanka is the only foreign market Bharti Airtel currently operates. It competes with firms such as Dialog Telekom, Sri Lanka Telecom Ltd.'s Mobitel, Hutchison Telecommunications International and Millicom International Cellular SA.

Bharti is in exclusive talks about a possible merger with South Africa's MTN until July 31. It had 102.4 million mobile users in its home market at the end of June. It has been adding about 2.8 million mobile users in India every month.

Firms controlled by Bharti Airtel's parent, Bharti Enterprises, provide telecom services in the Seychelles and the British Channel Islands.
