WPI down 0.12 pct yr/yr on Aug 29 - govt

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's wholesale price index fell 0.12 percent in the 12 months to Aug. 29, compared with the previous week's annual decline of 0.21 percent, government data showed on Thursday.

The drop was steeper than a median forecast of a 0.08 percent fall in a Reuters poll.

Government and private economists have warned that surging food prices would drive up inflation in coming months.

The annual inflation rate was 12.38 percent during the corresponding week of 2008.

The wholesale price index is more closely watched than the consumer price index, which is published monthly, because it covers a higher number of products and is released weekly.
