Investors gain 108% on BSE since last muhurat trading

Investors have seen an addition of Rs 30.45 lakh crore (108.6%) in their wealth on the Bombay Stock Exchange (^BSESN : 16032.71 -9.47) (BSE) since muhurat trading last year. The total BSE M-cap has increased to Rs 58.49 lakh crore on October 17 muhurat trading this year, from Rs 28.04 lakh crore on October 28, 2008. A significant increase in m-cap on October 17, 2009 was seen in steel, sugar, tyres and aluminium stocks. The M-cap of 198 A group companies increased 104.2% to Rs 49.54 lakh crore on October 17, 2009, from the level of Rs 24.26 lakh crore on October 28, 2008. Among the A group companies, the highest increase in m-cap was registered by Jindal Steel (JINDALSTE.NS : 609.45 +5.15) and Power followed by Lanco Infratech, IVRCL Infra and Torrent Power. Koutons Retail India, Sterling Biotech and Ackruti witnessed a significant decline. The Sensex, increased 8,317.93 points (92.3%) to 17,326.01 on October 17, 2009, from 9,008.08 on October 28, 2008. Nifty (^NSEI : 4781.25 -11.4) surged 2,457.20 points (91.5%) to 5,141.80 on October 17, 2009, from 2,684.60 on October 28, 2008. The M-cap of 112 steel companies, which had the highest increase, rose 205.4% from Rs 0.84 lakh crore on October 28, 2008, to Rs 2.56 lakh crore on October 17, 2009. A significant increase in M-cap was seen in the case of Jindal Steel and Power and JSW Steel. In the case of sugar group of companies, the total M-cap of 51 companies increased 185.4% to Rs 28,927 crore on October 17, 2009, from Rs 10,134 crore on October 28, 2008. The M-cap share of the sugar group on BSE overall increased from 0.36% to 0.49% on October 17, 2009. The m-cap of aluminium group companies increased 162.3% to Rs 47,582 crore on October 17, 2009, from the level of Rs 18,137 crore on October 28, 2008. In this group, Hindalco Industries (HINDALC0.NS : 142 0) and National Aluminium registered a significant increase in their M-cap. Among the industry groups studied, the lowest rise in m-cap was seen in the telecommunications and media sectors. In telecom, the total m-cap of 31 companies increased 18.1% to Rs 2.38 lakh crore on October 17, 2009, from the level of Rs 2.01 lakh crore on October 28, 2008. The M-cap share of the telecom industry declined from 7.19% on October 28, 2008, to 4.07% on October 17, 2009. In this group, Bharti Airtel (BHARTIARTL.BO : 317.1 +3.3) showed a significant increase in M-cap. During the study period, the M-cap of the media industry group increased 41.8% to Rs 8,593 crore from Rs 6,059 crore.
