The Haryana government Tuesday decided to increase the state advised price (SAP) of sugarcane for the 2009-10 crushing season by Rs 15 per quintal to Rs 185 per quintal for early varieties, Rs 180 for mid-varieties and Rs 175 per quintal for late maturing varieties. This is the highest official sugarcane price given to farmers this year, anywhere in the country. Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said that the cane price for the year 2010-11 has also been fixed and it will be Rs 210, Rs 205 and Rs 200 per quintal for early, mid and late varieties respectively. Presiding over a meeting of the sugarcane control board, the Chief Minister said the price of sugarcane for 2009-10 crushing season has been increased by Rs 15 per quintal, while that for the 2010-11 crushing season has been hiked by Rs 25 per quintal. Hooda said that the decision to fix price of sugarcane for 2010-11 crushing season has been taken in advance to encourage the farmers to grow more sugarcane. Sugar mills in the state, including those in the private sector have paid more than Rs 414.87 crore to the farmers for the sugarcane purchased by them during the year 2008-09. Reviewing the crushing season, the sugarcane control board observed that while the private mills would commence crushing from November 25, the mills in the cooperative sector would start crushing of sugarcane after November 25.
